An Expose Into Refractory “Gotta-Go” Syndrome and InterStim Therapy

WHEN THE BLADDER GOES ROGUE: IMPORTANT THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE “GOTTA–GO” SYNDROME, a.k.a OVERACTIVE BLADDER SYNDROME

The “Gotta- Go” Syndrome, medically known as the Overactive Bladder Syndrome, refers to a condition in which there is the constant urge to void due to constant bladder contraction. This leads to multiple urgent trips to the bathroom and usually results in leakage of urine before one reaches the bathroom.

Associated symptoms include:

  • Urinary urgency
  • Urinary frequency
  • Dribbling on the way to the bathroom
  • Urge related urinary leakage
  • Multiple nighttime bathroom breaks (nocturia)

Commonly, it results due to a sensory abnormality of the nerves that control the bladder musculature.

It is usually treated with oral medication, but, more often than not, these meds may not work, lose efficacy quickly, or have intolerable side effects. When any of the above results, one may be a candidate for sacral Neuromodulation/InterStim® procedure.
